Lawrence Keeley's groundbreaking War Before Civilization offers a devastating rebuttal to such comfortable myths and debunks the notion that warfare was introduced to primitive According to this view, it was little more than a ritualized game, where casualties were limited and the effects of aggression relatively mild. Aaron becker books5/28/2023 ![]() ![]() It’s going to strike a lot of adult readers as an environmental tale, and that’s not wholly wrong. And while I adore his Journey trilogy, there is still no better example of this than the equally wordless The Tree and the River. Much like picture books of the past (like those created by Mark Alan Stamaty or, to certain extent, Anno) Becker’s titles invite the readers to take the deepest of deep dives into his books. Proving that picture books are for more than preschoolers, Becker’s challenge his readers. And from the start, Aaron Becker decided that that niche would be to go big or go home. An area where you excel above and beyond your fellow compatriots. ![]() How do you stand out from the crowd? It’s probably a good idea to have a niche. The sheer number of them coming out every month just boggles the mind. ![]() Never before have more people created more picture books for the American market. In the world of 21st century picture book creators, it can be hard to stand out from the crowd. Not a lot of picture books out there covering the rise and fall of whole civilizations either, but here we are. Not a lot of picture books out there on the subject. ![]()

Stolen Glances by Tessa Boffin5/28/2023 ![]() ![]() Images and even people take on the burden of representing a larger group as a whole. The burden of scarcity still exists today. The scarce images of lesbian desire and sexual practices do not represent all of lesbian bodies as they often portray a specific characteristic of a specific group or identity. Lesbians within imagery are often “un-represented, under-represented or mis-represented” (Grover 187). Grover states, “So few representations, so many expectations how can any image can possibly satisfy the yearning that it is born into?” (Grover 187). In being outside of this narrow and familiar box of heterosexual stereotypes, Grover suggest that the scarce images that explore lesbian desire have an extra and heavy burden of expectation placed upon them. They are represented as being outside of the stereotypes of our patriarchal society. With this Grover explains that within the mainstream culture of today’s world, lesbian women can be seen as being represented as either sexual deviants or rendered completely invisible within society. ![]() ![]() In an article on lesbian photography, Jan Zita Grover analyses the positions taken by women and society in viewing lesbian sexual imagery in relation to a “burden of scarcity” (Grover 187). ![]()
