Life and times of frederick douglass5/29/2023 ![]() First, in 1845s Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, he felt it necessary to explain how a man born in chains could rise to national prominence and respect. ![]() from Chapter 17: Incidents and Events American icon FREDERICK DOUGLASS (1818-1895)-editor, orator, author, statesman, and reformer-told his life story three times. I have never felt myself isolated since I entered the field to plead the cause of the slave, and demand equal rights for all. ![]() Book Synopsis I have neither been miserable because of the ill-feeling of those about me, nor indifferent to popular approval, and I think, upon the whole, I have passed a tolerably cheerful and even joyful life. The great and secret show book5/29/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() There Jaffe, intercepting countless missives from all over the country, becomes privy to something The Art. It begins in riveting fashion with Jaffe, a dissatisfied man harboring grandiose ambitions sent to work in the dead letters office of Omaha, Nebraska, effectively the center of the United States. Those books may have been expansive, but they were also concise, something THE GREAT AND SECRET SHOW isn’t. THE GREAT AND SECRET SHOW is the most monumental of Clive Barker’s early (pre-1990) novels but also the most cluttered, lacking the leanness of THE DAMNATION GAME and WEAVEWORLD. ![]() That seriously wonky title adequately encapsulates this horror/fantasy epic’s charms, and its shortcomings as well. His imagination is also as fertile as ever, even though THE GREAT AND SECRET SHOW contains many overly familiar elements from Barker’s fiction: young lovers in danger, obsessive madmen and an alternate universe filled with a plethora of marvels and horrors (all of which are present in THE DAMNATION GAME, WEAVEWORLD, IMAGICA and this novel’s 1994 sequel EVERVILLE). The 650-page GREAT AND SECRET SHOW is enlivened by Clive Barker’s smooth, erudite prose, which as always is a joy to read. Definitely an interesting and unique novel, but a complete success? No. ![]()

Single and ready to jingle piper rayne5/29/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Ok first of all, let’s just pretend it’s still November, shall we? Because somehow this week got away from me. That’s when the Christmas miracle begins. It isn’t long until I discover Andrew has a very real reason to hate Christmas and I start to see him in a different light. As if I’d pass up an opportunity to make a Grinch’s heart grow three times its size. Bonus, we make a deal, and he agrees to attend three holiday events with me so I can make him fall in love with Christmas. So, when he calls for my help in planning his firm’s holiday party, I can’t pass up the opportunity to grow my small business. That last one is big for a girl like me who thinks that the entire month of December should be a national holiday. Santa likes lists and so do I, so here’s all the reasons why Andrew and I aren’t right for each other: Or his perfect hair with that single streak of grey at the front. Or the way his chest and arms fill out his suit. Our start was rocky at best which is why it’s so frustrating that I can’t stop thinking about his sexy British accent. In truth, it probably didn’t help that I showed up dressed like an elf but that’s a story for another time. What started as a dumpster fire of a blind date turns into a deal. ![]() The girl who loves Christmas falls for the Grinch-it’s a Christmas miracle. Creating the not so big house5/29/2023 ![]() ![]() Paul Ray, who identified a previously undiscovered segment of the population that was looking for ways to live “responsibly, sustainably, and meaningfully.” While the term “Cultural Creatives” is essentially the New Age version of Richard Florida’s “Creative Class” (and equally ill-defined), clearly her book was at the forefront of something – be it a new culture, a new class or a new generation. ![]() In the introduction to the 10th Anniversary Edition, she admits to being perplexed by the overwhelming response to her “not so big” message, but then she read an article on “Cultural Creatives” by sociologist Dr. Not only was technology reaching people in new ways, it was reaching the very people for whom Susanka was writing, even if she didn’t know it at the time. Since then she’s published five more books in the Not So Big series, but none have benefited as much from pitch-perfect timing. Shortly after its release, the book became number one on, the force of which wasn’t fully understood or appreciated back in 1998. It has been ten years since The Not So Big House became a surprise best seller, elevating a successful but unknown Minneapolis-based architect, Sarah Susanka, to the couch of Oprah Winfrey. ![]()

Dawn of wonder the wakening book 15/29/2023 ![]() And what is the thing in the lower left? A book with a tree on it? A gravestone with a mushroom cloud on it? If anyone knows, please tell me. Only by peaking ahead did I learn that the – stubby, dying tree? – is supposed to be a 1. ![]() The chapter number is supposed to be included in there somewhere, but which part is the number? My initial reaction is that it says “chapter two” because of the two arrows at the end, but that can’t be, as this is at the beginning of the book. Who let this terrifying visage go to print? Not a traditional publisher, I’m guessing. * The early chapters are available to read with Amazon’s Look Inside feature, so you can follow along there if you like. In addition, this book has 3,700+ reviews and only a D rating on Fakespot. It doesn’t help that these words border on cliché. “Dawn of Wonder” is already dramatic sounding, and adding “The Wakening” pushes it into melodrama. ![]() ![]() ![]() As soon as I spotted the cover for Jonathan Renshaw’s Dawn of Wonder, The Wakening, I knew this was the book to critique. ![]()
