The gathering enright novel5/30/2023 ![]() Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. But the themes, the Irishness, the Man Bookered. She deserves to have her book examined alone. ![]() I'm almost apologetic about making Enright's novel seem an Irish twin to Banville's. 'The Gathering' was very good, just not great. It was less of a memory than an imagined history, a search for meaning in loss, a desperate search for who and why in family. Banville's novel was almost elegiac and poetic in its mourning. It was a picked scab, a hot wound, a shout into a dark wet cave tea without sugar or cream, aged whiskey without the water. Banville's The Sea was more poetic, more soothing a search for the correct word, the proper memory. Both were Man Booker Prize winners (born two years apart). Both novels centered around drownings, death, and memory. The Irish know how to feck, fight and die. ![]() We live in them instead” ― Anne Enright, The Gathering I grabbed a couple of my Irish writers to read while traveling back and forth to Ireland for pleasure. ![]() “I do not think we remember our family in any real sense. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() I planned on reading a bit of this book before bed and the rest the next day, but I powered through the entire thing in two hours, heart racing, brain pinging off the inside of my skull, every single word resonating with me and my experience with love. There’s nothing groundbreaking in terms of the messaging, but sometimes it’s not about what is said, but about how it’s said. This book is wholly unpretentious, relatable and, above anything else, insanely liberating. In just 160 pages, we take a deep dive into dating, relationships and heartbreak. I thought it sounded interesting and bought it on a whim. I hadn’t heard of the book or, indeed, the author, before I spotted the cover in an Instagram post on its release day. I Wish I Knew This Earlier: Lessons on Love by Toni Tone isn’t a self-help book, but to me, that’s exactly what it is. ![]() But this is one of those very rare times, and so: you have to read this book. It’s not often that a book has such a profound effect on me that I feel compelled to tell everyone I know to read it. ![]()

![]() ![]() The Wu Li Master always begins at the center, the heart of the matter. The Wu Li Master does not teach, but the student learns. ![]() Zukav explains the concept further: The Wu Li Master dances with his student. Dancing Wu Li Masters: An Overview of the New Physics Paperback 27 October 2009 by Gary Zukav (Author) 698 ratings See all formats and editions Kindle Edition 309.30 Read with Our Free App Hardcover 48,300.00 1 New from 48,300.00 Paperback 1,306.00 12 New from 1,161. At the conference, it was said that the Chinese term for physics is 'Wu Li', or "patterns of organic energy." Zukav, among others, conceptualized 'physics' as the dance of the Wu Li Masters – teachers of physical essence. Zukav participated as a journalist in a 1976 physics conference of eastern and western scientists at Esalen Institute, California and he used the occasion as material for his book. This becomes somewhat of a pun as there are many other Chinese characters that could be rendered as "wu li" in atonal pinyin, and chapters of the book are each titled with alternative translations of Wu Li, such as "Nonsense", "My Way" and "I Clutch My Ideas". The toneless pinyin phrase Wu Li in the title is most accurately rendered 物理 in Chinese characters, one Chinese translation of the word "physics" in the light of the book's subject matter. ![]()

The unthinkable ripley5/30/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() First, by default, ignore anything those in charge say during a disaster, especially any instructions they give you. You can boil down the survival advice in this book to three principles. Few are easy to change-but any bit helps, I suppose. Some are merely extremely difficult to change and in practice immutable for the individual, such as culture and education. ![]() Many of these are innate and wholly unchangeable, such as sex, intelligence and ability to absorb stress, each of which is a critical factor in survival. And while the book accomplishes the goal of self-help for the attentive reader, even more it shows that who lives and who dies mostly results from characteristics of the individual. But the promised self-improvement isn’t better organization, inner peace or higher task efficiency rather it is increased odds of living through a disaster. The Unthinkable is basically a self-improvement manual. ![]()
